What is the difference between a WiFi Mesh and a WiFi Extender?

WiFi Mesh systems and WiFi Extenders both work on strengthening WiFi signal and eliminating dead spots in your home. However, these two solutions work quite differently. Here are the main differences between the two:

WIFI COVERAGE
The range that WiFi Extenders can cover is much smaller than that of a WiFi Mesh system. Typically, extenders can extend WiFi signal by 300 to 2,000 sq. ft. whereas WiFi Mesh systems can cover areas from 2,000 to 6,000 sq. ft with 3 mesh units. And if additional units are added, the coverage area can be extended further. This makes WiFi Mesh systems perfect for large homes and multi-level homes.

NETWORK
In a typical setup that uses an Extender, users often see multiple network names – one network offered by your wireless router and the others offered by the Extenders. You will need to manually switch from one network to another depending on which device you are nearest to, which can be inconvenient if you move around the house a lot. Mesh Systems, on the other hand, offer a seamless roaming experience as devices are able to automatically connect to the closest mesh unit.

SET UP AND MANAGEMENT
Setting up a WiFi Extender can be a challenge as it needs to be manually configured to work with your router. What is the difference between a WiFi 5 and WiFi 6 Mesh?

WiFi 5 and WiFi 6 refer to the technologies that power a WiFi Mesh system. And the latter is the latest and best WiFi Mesh technology available in the country today. Here’s why:

BIGGER BANDWIDTH AND FASTER SPEEDS
WiFi 6 expands the WiFi channel width you are able to access from 80 MHz to 160MHz – that’s double the  channel width internet traffic can pass through! Imagine that with WiFi 5, traffic passes through a single lane. With WiFi 6, traffic is able to pass through 2 lanes, creating a faster connection from your router to the device you are using.

What do I need to start putting together my WiFi Mesh system?

If you are a new WiFi Mesh user, you will need at least two WiFi Mesh units to start building your system. One unit will serve as your WiFi Mesh Router and this will be connected to your Fiber Modem. The other WiFi Mesh unit can serve as your WiFi Mesh Access Point and can be placed in the area or room where WiFi signal is absent weak so that coverage is extended to the mentioned area. You may add as many WiFi Mesh Access Points as needed.

How many units do I need for my home?

We recommend having one mesh device per 100 square meters or 1,000 square feet for sufficient and effective WiFi coverage. But here are the recommended WiFi Mesh setups per type of home:

Small bungalow or 1-bedroom apartments
Two WiFi Mesh units should be enough for this type of home. One unit will be plugged directly to your modem and the other can be placed in a spot in the area which the WiFi signal from your modem does not reach.

Large bungalow, two-storey home or townhouses
For best results, we recommend atleast 3 WiFi Mesh devices. One unit will be plugged directly to your modem and the other can be distributed throughout your home, following the above recommended distance between mesh units.

Three-storey home or bigger
Two WiFi Mesh units per floor would be the optimum number of mesh devices especially for houses that are 150 square meters or more. One unit will be plugged directly to your modem while the other units may be distributed throughout the home.

How do I know where to place my WiFi Mesh units?

You don’t need fancy software to identify WiFi dead spots in your home. You may simply pick up your wireless device, connect to your WiFi network and walk around your house. Pay attention to the WiFi signal indicator on your device. If signal strength drops or goes down to zero then you’ve found a weak signal area or a dead spot.

In addition, your WiFi Mesh system, once it has been set up, will also tell you via the app the quality of the signal in the area where it is placed so you can be guided on where best to place your mesh units.

How do I ensure I have the optimal WiFi Mesh setup?

Know which areas in your home have low or no WiFi signal and place your mesh units in the center of these areas. Avoid placing your WiFi mesh units in the corner of a room or near a window as this will limit WiFi range. These devices emit spherical shaped signal so it’s best to have them positioned in the center of a room, far from any physical obstructions like walls, cabinets and shelves, so that it can evenly distribute strong WiFi signal across the area. It also helps improve signal if you place your mesh units at eye-level or higher.

Make sure your mesh units are also far from any metal objects or appliances that emit electromagnetic waves such as the ones listed below (naming a few) as these cause signal interference.

What is the ideal distance between my WiFi Mesh units?

A good rule of thumb is to place the WiFi Mesh units approximately 100 to 150 square feet apart from one another, free from obstructions and wireless interferences. Note that this distance may vary depending on the setup of your home (e.g., thickness and materials used for walls).

How do I set up my WiFi Mesh system?

All the WiFi Mesh systems that we offer come with a companion app, which makes setting up the mesh network easy and convenient! The app will give you a step-by-step guide on how to quickly install and manage your network.

You may download the following apps on Google Play or the Apple Store, depending on the mesh units that you have:

  • Tenda Nova – Tenda Nova App

Once you’ve downloaded and opened these apps, make sure your WiFi and GPS are turned on before you start the setup process so that your setup experience will be seamless.

Why am I not getting the promised speed of my plan when I connect to my WiFi Mesh system?

There are several factors that may affect the speed you are getting when connected to your WiFi Mesh system. Here are the most common factors and how to address them:

  • The distance of the end-device (e.g., your mobile phone, laptop or tablet)
    Signal loss is a common occurrence when WiFi signal is extended wirelessly. With a WiFi Mesh setup, the WiFi signal will travel from your main WiFi Mesh router to the WiFi Mesh access point and the distance between the two has a direct effect on the speed of your connection. The farther the WiFi Mesh access point is from the WiFi Mesh router, the slower the speeds you will get on your end-device. To minimize effects on speed, it is ideal to place the main modem in the center of your home (vs. tucked away in a corner) as this achieves proper positioning of the mesh access point and minimizes the distance from the mesh router.
  • Interferences that may affect your WiFi Mesh unit’s signal
    Physical and wireless interference may affect the signal being broadcasted by your WiFi Mesh system. Be sure to place your WiFi Mesh units in the center of the room at eye-level, away from walls, cabinets and shelves that may block the signal. You must also avoid placing your WiFi Mesh units beside gadgets or appliances that emit wireless signals like microwave ovens, Smart TVs, printers, cordless phones, etc.)
  • The specifications of your end-device
    WiFi Mesh systems that are powered by WiFi 5 technology commonly run on 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies. These frequencies are the highways where WiFi signals are transmitted. The 2.4GHz band allows for long-range transmission of WiFi signals but cannot deliver speeds of more than 100Mbps. Meanwhile, 5GHz offers shorter range but can deliver gigabit speeds. To maximize the capabilities of your WiFi 5 Mesh System, the device you are using to connect to WiFi must also have dual-band support so you can enjoy both range and ultra fast speeds. If your device is single-band, which can be the case for older models, the WiFi speeds you will be able to achieve are limited.
  • Internet usage
    Another factor that may affect the WiFi speed you are enjoying is the number of devices connected to your network at a given time as well as the online activity. Bandwidth is shared by devices that are simultaneously connected to a network thus WiFi speed is affected. Internet speed depends on the type of usage as well. If the concurrent users are all engaged in bandwidth-heavy activities such as HD video streaming, video conferencing, download or upload of large files, this will have a considerable impact on the speed each user is getting.
  • Applications running in the background
    Software, system and app updates also eat up bandwidth and can affect WiFi speeds. We don’t notice these activities as they can run automatically, in the background, as we go about our usual online activities. It will help to disable these automatic updates and set these up so that your permission is required for said activities to proceed so that you can be fully aware of the ongoing activities that may impact your speed.

When connecting to my network, should I connect to the main SSID from my main modem or should I connect to the SSID from my WiFi Mesh?

To enjoy seamless connections throughout your home, you need to connect to your WiFi Mesh system’s SSID.

The WiFi of your Fiber modem must be turned off to prevent any interference on the WiFi Mesh network. This will also prevent your end-device from automatically connecting to the Fiber Modem’s WiFi instead of your WiFi Mesh.

To turn off your Fiber modem’s WiFi, you may follow the instructions indicated in the user guide that came with it. Most Fiber modems also have WiFi/WLAN buttons at the back or at the side of the unit that will allow you to turn your modem’s WiFi ON or OFF.

What do I do if my device is unable to connect to my WiFi Mesh?

The first step you need to take is to make sure that the WiFi password you are trying to enter is correct. Check symbols and capitalization as these are common password errors. You may check your WiFi details through your WiFi Mesh system’s app:

  • TP Link Deco M4: Go to More Settings>WiFi Router Settings>Check WiFi password
  • Tenda Nova MW6: Go to Settings>Wireless Settings>Check WiFi password

Some WiFi Mesh systems have blacklisting features, which allows users to prevent identified devices from connecting to the network. Make sure your devices is not listed as one of the blacklisted devices. If it is, you may remove it through these steps:

  • TP Link Deco M4: Go to More Settings>Blacklist Router Settings
  • Tenda Nova MW6: Go to Connected Devices > Blacklist Icon

If the mentioned steps did not solve the issue, you may try rebooting the device and check again. If the issue still persists you may try restoring your WiFi Mesh system to its factory settings. Note that once you do this you will need to reconfigure your WiFi Mesh system. Here’s how to restore your WiFi Mesh to its factory settings:

TPLINK DECO M4 TENDA MW6

The reset button for the TP Link Deco M4 can be found at the bottom center of the unit.

Press on it using a safety pin for 1 second or until the LED indicator light turns yellow.

If the unit’s indicator light turns red, you may try pressing on the reset button again, this time, for atleast 5 seconds.

The reset button for the Tenda Nova MW6 unit can be found at the bottom, upper right portion of the unit.

Press on it using a safety pin for 6 seconds until the LED light turns blinking green.

(Note: you will need to perform factory reset on all your WiFi Mesh access points if you wish to reset the whole system. After doing the procedure, device configurations will reset to default and you will need to reconfigure the Access Point/s.)

What do I do if my Wifi Mesh’s SSID cannot be found?

There are several things you can try if you encounter this problem:

  • Try moving your end-device (e.g., your laptop, mobile phone or tablet) to the nearest WiFi Mesh unit. It’s possible that your device is out of range, which prevents it from seeing your WiFi Mesh system’s SSID. You may also consider repositioning your WiFi Mesh units so that these cover the areas you frequent.
  • You may also try refreshing the WiFi connection of your device. Simply turn off your device’s WiFi and turn it back on after a few seconds.
  • TP Link Deco WiFi Mesh systems have the option to hide the WiFi SSID those that can be seen by available devices. Make sure that this feature is disabled for your WiFi Mesh network thru the Deco App. See the steps below on how to do this:

    Open the Deco App and login, go to More > Router Settings (Wi-Fi) > Tap Network Name/Password > Toggle Hide this network from Wi-Fi list button to enable or disable option > Save
